How do I switch from the internal antenna to an external antenna?

Last updated on 30 Jan, 2026

If you’re using a Phyn Plus 1st Generation and have purchased an external Wi-Fi antenna, you can switch from the built-in internal antenna to the external antenna either during setup or after pairing is complete.

Important
Phyn Plus uses the internal antenna by default. Before switching, make sure the external antenna is physically connected to the device.

What you’ll need

  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi antenna with a male RP-SMA connector

    • Inner threads

    • Center receptacle (not a pin)

  • The antenna must be attached before switching in the app

Switch antennas during initial setup

  1. Launch the Phyn app.

  2. Tap Set Up Device and select Phyn Plus.

  3. Complete the step where the app connects to your Phyn device.

  4. When you reach the Connect to Network screen, look for Antenna: Internal.

  5. Tap Antenna: Internal.

  6. Tap to switch to External.

  7. Wait while the app shows Switching.

  8. Confirm when Connected to External Antenna appears.

If you try to switch without an external antenna attached, pairing will fail and you’ll see a message prompting you to factory reset the device.

After a factory reset, the antenna setting will return to Internal, and you’ll need to restart pairing.

Switch antennas after pairing is complete

  1. Launch the Phyn app.

  2. Tap Menu > Settings > Device > Wi-Fi Settings > Antenna.

  3. Confirm the external antenna is attached.

  4. Tap Switch to External Antenna.

  5. Tap Continue to confirm.

  6. Wait while the app evaluates signal strength.

If the external antenna provides a stronger signal, the setting will update to Antenna: External.

If the signal is equal to or weaker than the internal antenna, you’ll see a message explaining that Phyn will continue using the internal antenna to preserve Wi-Fi strength.

If you’re still having connection issues

  • An external antenna may not be enough in areas with very weak Wi-Fi

  • A Wi-Fi range extender may be required

  • Phyn Customer Support can also assist with antenna configuration

If you’re unsure which antenna to use or need help switching, contact Phyn Customer Support for assistance.
