How do I find and use my main water shut-off valve?

Last updated on 30 Jan, 2026

Every home has a main water shut-off valve. Knowing where it is—and how to use it—can help prevent serious water damage in an emergency.

If you’re unsure where your shut-off valve is located after reviewing this guide, check your property inspection report or contact a licensed plumber for help.

Where to find your shut-off valve

The location varies by home type and climate.

  • In colder climates, shut-off valves are usually located indoors

  • In warmer climates, they may be outside near an exterior wall

Common locations include:

  • Near the front foundation wall where water enters the home

  • Within 3–5 feet of where the main water line enters

  • A basement, mechanical room, crawl space, or utility area

  • Near the water heater or furnace

  • Under the kitchen sink in slab-on-grade homes

If your shut-off valve is outdoors, look near the side or front of the house closest to the street.

Homes with fire sprinkler systems:
Be careful to shut off only the household water supply. The correct valve is typically located after (downstream from) the fire sprinkler system connection.

How to turn off the main water supply

  1. Identify the type of shut-off valve you have.

  2. Turn the valve slowly to avoid stressing the plumbing.

Valve types:

  • Lever handle valve: Turn the handle one quarter turn until it is no longer parallel with the pipe

  • Round wheel valve: Turn the handle clockwise until it stops, which may take several full turns

Once closed, water flow into your home should stop completely.
