I got a “Plumbing Check Leak” alert. What does this mean?

Last updated on 14 Jan, 2026

Phyn continuously monitors your plumbing for leaks and also runs automatic diagnostic tests called Plumbing Checks. These checks can detect extremely small leaks even just a few drips per minute.

During a Plumbing Check, Phyn briefly turns off your water and monitors pressure in your pipes. If the system detects a pressure drop, you’ll receive a “Plumbing Check Leak” alert. This usually means one of the following:

Common causes and what to check

Dripping faucets or spigots

A faucet or outdoor spigot may be slightly open or dripping.

  • Check all faucets and spigots inside and outside your home.

  • Tighten or repair any that are leaking.

Leaking toilet flapper

A worn or misaligned toilet flapper can allow small amounts of water to leak.

  • Turn off the toilet using the shutoff valve behind it.

  • Run another Plumbing Check.

  • If the alert clears, that toilet is likely the source.

Tip: You can also add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If color appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is leaking.

Small plumbing leak

There may be a minor leak somewhere in your plumbing system.

  • First, confirm no faucets, spigots, or toilets are leaking.

  • Turn off sinks and toilets at their shutoff valves.

  • Run additional Plumbing Checks.

  • If alerts continue, a licensed plumber can help locate the leak.

Irrigation or sprinkler system leak

If you have an irrigation or sprinkler system, a valve may be leaking.

  • Turn off water to the irrigation system.

  • Run another Plumbing Check.

  • If the alert clears, the irrigation system is likely the cause.

A plumber may be needed to inspect sprinkler valves or heads for hidden leaks.
