Pairing error – Something went wrong during pairing

Last updated on 30 Jan, 2026

If you see the error message “Pairing error – something went wrong during pairing. Please reconnect to your device to diagnose” while attempting to pair your Phyn device to your wireless router, this indicates that the Phyn device can see your router and attempts to connect, but the connection is being blocked.

Why this error occurs

This error is most commonly caused by network security settings or network configurations that prevent the Phyn device from completing the connection. This can occur when:

  • Network security software is enabled on the router

  • Advanced firewall or intrusion prevention features are active

  • The router is configured with a virtual LAN (VLAN)

  • You are using an enterprise-grade router

  • You are attempting to connect through a Wi-Fi extender that is not fully configured

This issue is frequently seen with enterprise or advanced consumer routers, such as the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine.

Network security features that may block pairing

The following network security services may need to be disabled temporarily to allow pairing:

  • Netgear Armor

  • Netgear Access Control

  • Eero Secure

  • Eero Secure+

  • Asus AiProtection powered by Trend Micro

  • TP-Link HomeCare™ (Trend Micro Antivirus and Network Security)

  • Trend Micro Home Network Security

  • Trend Micro Home Network Station

  • Trend Micro AiProtection

For Trend Micro–based solutions, you can reference their router compatibility list if needed.

Router-specific considerations

  • On UniFi Dream Machine and UniFi Dream Machine Pro routers, enabling advanced security features such as DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) can block the Phyn device from pairing.

  • VLAN configurations can prevent the Phyn device from accessing required network services during pairing.

What you can do

  1. Temporarily disable network security software or advanced firewall features on your router.

  2. Ensure the Phyn device is connecting to a standard 2.4 GHz network without VLAN segmentation.

  3. If using a Wi-Fi extender, confirm it is fully configured and has internet access.

  4. Retry the pairing process after making these changes.

Once pairing is complete, you can re-enable your network security features and monitor connectivity.
